BIRTH

What is a doula?

doo·la: A trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support before, during and just after birth. (DONA International)

The term doula comes from the ancient Greek word 'doule' meaning "a woman who serves". Traditionally, women attended each other's births. They would provide physical and emotional support to allow the birth to unfold in a safe and supportive environment.

Today, doulas offer that role to all birthing families.

"When (people) have the information they need and a supportive environment, pregnancy, childbirth and feeding can unfold without unnecessary and unwanted interventions. When families are educated about all of their options, they can make decisions that reflect their healthcare needs and their personal values."

Building Your Birth Team

Whether it's your first, third or fifth child, birth is an intimate experience that can be both empowering and transformational. You get to choose who is there supporting you along the way. With access to evidence-based information, you can make the best decisions for you, your baby and your family. These decisions, whatever they may be, will be supported unconditionally by your doula.

  • Normalize the birth experience for the entire family

  • Gently guide you to best achieve the birth you desire by listening and supporting your unique needs and wishes

  • Provide you with, and help you access, further evidence-based information

  • Offer a series of laboring support & comfort measures throughout the birth

  • Hold the space for you and your partner to navigate your own rhythm throughout your labor

  • Assist with immediate postpartum care

  • Make referrals to trusted practitioners in the community who may be able to support you throughout pregnancy, birth & the postpartum period

  • Provide guidance on herbal support you could utilize throughout your pregnancy and the months postpartum to nourish your body and ease these transitions
