BIRTH

What is a doula?

doo·la: A trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support before, during and just after birth. (DONA International)

The term doula comes from the ancient Greek word 'doule' meaning "a woman who serves". Traditionally, women attended each other's births. They would provide physical and emotional support to allow the birth to unfold in a safe and supportive environment.

Today, doulas offer that role to all birthing families.

"When (people) have the information they need and a supportive environment, pregnancy, childbirth and feeding can unfold without unnecessary and unwanted interventions. When families are educated about all of their options, they can make decisions that reflect their healthcare needs and their personal values."

  • Offer a series of laboring support & comfort measures throughout the birth

  • Hold the space for you and your partner to navigate your own rhythm throughout your labor

  • Assist with immediate postpartum care

  • Make referrals to trusted practitioners in the community who may be able to support you throughout pregnancy, birth & the postpartum period
